"Baby Priest": What's Up with That?

Ok friends, "Baby Priest" has not gone live yet, but a few of you know about it. But there is already some question about the title, "Baby Priest."

Against "Baby Priest" as a title:

Too cutesy, and Preston is not cutesy.

For "Baby Priest" as a title:

It's a common moniker given to the recently ordained, and really sums up the flavor of the site; these are the reflections of a recently ordained priest.

So, does it go or stay?

Karen likes "baby priest."

Problem is she actually does think I'm cutesy.

yup - we're with Karen - we think you're cutesy too. Sorry dude. I mean, really, who looks at that picture and thinks anything but "after-school-special"?

When I think of you, Preston, I conjure images of Father Zosima; harsh, snow-covered Canadian steppes; a determined man who won't allow any shades of green on his dinner plate. "Baby priest" doesn't fit. It goes.

ok - just for the record - Joe, have you ever seen the harsh, snow covered Canadian steppes? I usually don't even bother shovelling my steps from November to May... and I still think they're cute. :-)

Preston,
Sorry, man, but I'm with Joe. I was horrified to receive word of your blog's title -- definately not the guy I studied with in seminary. How about something more like "Crusty Ol' Bastard"? BTW, did your spiritual director tell you to start blogging? Where did this come from? Is Davis, CA really as hot and lonely as I've heard?

Wow such harsh words . . .

Perhaps those so opposed can offer some other title that might catch the intention here - one that captures the idea of a blog that is written by a recently ordained priest? "Recently Ordained Priest" doesn't quite do it. It's more of an Aloysha vibe here than a Zossima vibe, Joe. Naive, sometimes disilliusioned, sometimes just wanting to run away and eat sausage. But compellingly faithful. That's the idea. Certainly not crusty ol' bastard. I have a feeling that 'blog has been done already.

Paul - I've been thinking about blogging for a while, parlty in order to get myself writing a bit more, partly as an outlet for what is often bouncing in my head but rarely expressed. Then I came across the blog of a good friend (see it at ...Beauty in Chaos... ), and she inspired me to just do it. Why not? It's also a good way to keep in touch with folks, so they can know what I am up to.

Serious answer: Baby priest does sound a bit too cutsey, especially since your comments are likely not derived from baby ideas but rather well thought out and studied ideas. How about "Gen X Priest."

Not so serious: How about "Baby Faced Priest."

Really not so serious: Do we have to know what Karen calls you behind closed doors?

A message that Jane R. invited me to post:

Well, in various movements for social justice and in liberation and
feminist theologies we say people should be able to name themselves as they
wish. So, you wanna be Baby Priest for a while, be Baby Priest. Then when
you don't think you're a baby priest any more (or when we name you Young
Crusty by acclamation) you change your moniker. Karen J changed her blog
site name after a while. That said, you're kinda cute and kinda crusty and
kinda Zosima-ish. Hey, you just did this poll so all these people would
write and tell you you were cute!

Do what you want. We'll read you anyway!

Happy feast of St. Benedict.

Jane
